Lichenology (lichen+science, Greek/Latin) is a scientific field studying, collecting and arranging the knowledge on lichens.
You can learn more about lichens if you study lichens in the field, laboratory, herbaria, lichenological literature and homepages

Lichens in the field
To study lichens in the field you need the following equipments:
c. 10x handlens, paperbags, pencil, collecting knife, hammer, chisel, camera.

Lichens in the laboratory
Microscopic and chemical investigations based on lichenological literature are necessary for identification of lichens.

Lichens in herbaria
The collected and identified specimens are best to be stored in herbaria.
Nomenclatural changes are to be checked in on-line database Index Fungorum or MycoBank.
